There are lots of tools that convert certain media files to Flash, thus being easier to upload them on the Internet, but there are not so many that do the opposite. If something like an image, sound or effect catches your eye while viewing a Flash presentation (SWF or EXE), you will not be able to get it with conventional tools. With Flash Decompiler Gold, you can extract any resources from a SWF file, including images, shapes, buttons, sounds, fonts, dynamic text and more. You do not have to be an experienced user in order to export a SWF's resources. The simple design of the interface makes possible to perform any task with minimum effort.

The download is 7 and a half Mb large, which should not be a problem, even if your connection to the Internet is slow. The system requirements are not high and you can install the software on operating systems ranging from Windows 98 to Windows Vista.

Before extracting resources, you can preview a Flash file, in SWF or EXE format. There are two ways in which a file may be loaded. The traditional way involves clicking the Preview options in the File menu and browsing for it in a separate window. An easier way is to browse for it in the navigation pane, in the lower left corner of the interface. You only have to click the file once and it will be loaded automatically.

A loaded Flash file can be previewed with a built in player, found on the central area of the interface. A file's details, such as name, size, version, frame count and more, are displayed in a table of contents, beneath the player. To start exporting its resources, the file needs to be loaded again, but with the Open option in the File menu. The resources themselves will be displayed in a tree structure on the right edge of the main window and you can select which ones to save with the aid of check boxes. Certain elements, like images, fonts, morphs and so on, can be viewed separately on the player if you click their entries in the tree structure.

The Export Resources button, in the upper right corner, will bring up a new window where a series of drop menus will let you choose to export the resources as Flash or in their original format (BMP, JPEG, TXT, etc). Finally, the output path can be set from the same window and clicking the OK button will export them immediately. Exporting these items in FLA format can be done by clicking the Export Data button, also found in the upper right corner of the main window. This will only bring up a dialog box, on the bottom edge of the interface, where you must specify the save path.

Flash Decompiler can also convert a Flash file from SWF to EXE format or vice versa. The Convert option can be found in the File menu and it works the same way as the Export Data feature. A similar dialog box will appear in the same area as before (the bottom edge) where you have to specify the source file. There will be no progress bar to wait for, in other words, the conversion will take only a few seconds.

Pros

Flash Decompiler Gold offers a neat and comfortable way to extract a Flash file's resources. It only requires loading it, selecting the resources and saving them. If you don't have something to play a SWF with, the software can convert it to the more accessible EXE format.

Cons

The user interface can not be resized. With Flash Decompiler Gold, you can extract any resources from a Flash file in SWF or EXE format or convert from one of these formats to the other.
